Katy and Kid

Katy and Kid

Katy, for people who don’t follow or have never seen The Young Riders, is a beautiful Paint horse who The Kid fought for in the pilot episode. Katy is really a male and his name is Duke! I will continue to call her Katy though, and refer to her as female for this post and others.

Talking with fans between scenes

Katy was a very well-trained horse. She would be able to stand on a mark and not budge an inch for as long as was needed to get the shot. She had a very calm demeanor and seemed to love being around people. For scenes with gunfire, all the horses had big cotton balls placed in their ears. All the horses were well taken care of and loved by everyone on the set.

I felt a bond with Katy — not unlike that which was portrayed in the show. I’ve thought about her often through the years. I really did love that horse.

Thank you Ty, for sharing your set remembers and feelings. All that story about Katy is very interesting (I learnt something about cotton’s balls. Lol!). I understand you could have create such a bond with Katy during this 3 years, and you cas think about it even now. I also understand the reason you didn’t buy it. It’s very good one.

      Thanks, Marion!

I was wondering if the horse played in any other movies

      • Darlene says:

I wanted to ask why you didn’t buy Duke after the show ended (what happened to him); I didn’t see the reason when I read your story. I started watching the show only this year (when the show originally aired I was stationed overseas–grateful for reruns) and have become a fan of many areas covered in the show. I like the way Josh & Stephen interpreted the youth of two true historical characters. I enjoy the relationship of all the characters. I hope all is well with you.

        • Ty says:

Many reasons, but the top of the list is that it would have been incredibly selfish and unfair for me to remove that horse from the place that he loved. I know that he loved it, too, because the wranglers took care of their animals very well. Thanks for writing. Glad you enjoy the show. It was great to be a part of it.

Katy was the reason behind my later love of TYR. Flipping through the channels, I’d paused on some Western show with this stunning horse. I didn’t have posters of teen heartthrobs wallpapering my bedroom walls – horses claimed that stage!
Katy was unlike any Paint I’d previously seen. I remember watching the entire episode that day. I remember racing my sister home to catch the next episodes thereafter.
Certainly, the characters and storyline quickly hooked me to TYR, but Katy was my first crush!

  3. Colleen says:

What happened to Katy after the show? Did she stay with her trainers? How old was she when you rode her? Is she still living? (I still can’t believe Katy was a gelding. The cameras hid that well).

    • Ty says:

Yep, she stayed with the trainers. I recall she was around 3 yrs. at the start of the show. I’m not sure if she is still alive, though. I need to look into that!

  4. Michele says:

Have you ever found out if (she ) is still alive ?? And I must say I have re found my love of the show and let u know I had the biggest crush on u and that horse 😉

  5. Colleen says:

Don’t find out. Let’s remember her young. It was insensitive of me to ask.

  6. Regina says:

Today I was explaining to my daughter what a painted horse is and that my favorite paint was Katy from The Young Riders. I wondered what happened to Katy and typed in Katy the horse from Young Riders and it brought me here. I am so happy that it did! Young Riders was my favorite show when I was a teenager, I never missed a show. Love your website!

  7. Haley says:

I was just wondering if you ever found out if she was still alive? I watched the show for the first time a few weeks ago and I fell in love with her.

  8. Missy Brown says:

Loved this show so much, I never missed an episode. Lou and Kid were my favorite characters, followed by Katy. Now as an adult, and owning seasons one threw three on dvd, Lou and Kid are still my favorite. You guys did such a wonderful job portraying theses characters and making them come alive, Thank You so much! Thank you for sharing these memories with us, it means a lot!

  9. Trish says:

That was a really beautiful horse. Remembered it well even when the show wasn’t on the air. Love horses. Been long time since I rode, though.

  10. Di says:

I watched Wagon Train and one of the actors was also named Miller any relation?

  11. Dani says:

I love watching Katy, she is soo graceful. I was wondering, how tall is she? Most paints I see don’t look as tall as her.

    • Ty says:

You’re right, she is a tall horse! I can’t remember her exact height, but definitely over 16 hands.

      • Dani says:

Thank you, Ty! I knew she was tall. I love paints and she is unlike any I have seen before. I can see why you two bonded so quickly. Thank you for sharing your memories.

    Katy, is a sweet girl.

  15. Being a cowboy’s daughter, born in CA and lived on a ranch, I only discovered The Young Riders the past few months on Starz Westerns. I adore each of you Pony Express Riders. Your love for Katy is super special. Your series has taken this senior back in time. Thank you so much Kid – you are loved…

Katy – Beautiful boy this paint – you ride her/him so well…finally figured it out!!! LOL rg

  17. Maureen says:

I glad that alot of the actors from the went on to successful careers. To me “Katy” reminds me of the horse in thr movie Hildago. Thanks for making a show that we could come home after work and leave the work at work. Thanks again

  18. Dianne says:

    Mr. Miller,
I watch The Young Riders every night. Katy is a beautiful & amazing horse. I loved your character as The Kid. Great show! You & Lou were so sweet.

  19. Carrie says:

My favorite character was definitely the the Kid, and as a lifelong horse lover, Katy was the main reason why. The Kid won my heart in the first episode, where he fought for her. I am a model horse customizer and I’m actually getting ready to paint one in her (his) likeness. I wish I could get some more photos of her without her saddle, so I can see her markings better!

  20. Alisa says:

Nice idea with the cotton, now the real question is, did the handlers know how to stop horses from being afraid of mailboxes! Been riding for over 35 years and still haven’t figured that one out yet!

My Grandma had an Appaloosa horse named katie that looks just like Katy and was a female

  22. Barbara says:

Katy/Duke is one horse I would have love to ride as he has a very gentle gait. I have ridden for over 50 years and he is the best gaited horse I think I have ever seen, like sitting in a rocking chair. LOL. Thanks for the show and all the hard work you all put in to it. I have watched it, all three seasons, several times. It is is just too good!! Barbara A Texas Old Western Lady

  23. BrokeDog says:

I loved the show AND all U guys (and especially Lou)! Katy had a special place in my heart, also. U folks made an excellent show, that was better’n yall got credit for. Has their ever been any talk of a “reunion-type” movie? I realize that reunions are hard to do … but, I’d still like to see one.
Thanks for giving me many hours of great entertainment!
    P.S. Loved U on “The X-Files”, too!

  24. Sue says:

I use to watch TYR when it first came on TV with my kids. We really enjoyed the actors , horses and western theme. Its great to see it again. I’m a fan all over again! And Katy was the most beautiful horse ever!!!

  25. Twiyla Lambson says:

I loved the young riders I watch the reruns now. Sending love ur way from oklahoma

  26. Twiyla Lambson says:

    Not dry lol marry

  27. Susan Stafford says:

I notice that Hildago looks like Katy and that’s the kind of horse I’m looking for and hard to find. If Katy is still alive, he is 30 yrs old. Do you keep in touch with the other actors and if so who, it’s a shame that show couldn’t go on until the year pony express was replace by other means, I love that show and you guys too with Katy

  28. Betty Fitzgerald says:

Found the show last year on Encore Westerns and really enjoy it. Question: Why did we never find out the name of your character – not just “The Kid”?

    • Ty says:

Betty, the show’s creator(Ed Spielman), intended for Kid’s name not to be known. Glad you like the show…

      • Betty Fitzgerald says:

While watching an HGTV Beachfront House Hunters show last week, a family was horseback riding along the Pacific coast in upper California. One of the horses looked very much like Katy (Duke). FYI.

  29. Darlene says:

Last week when I was site seeing, I visited pony express stations at Rock Creek, NE, Gothenburg, NE, and Julesburg, CO. Rock Creek is 180 degrees from the show. I know a lot of liberties had to be taken for the tv show. I missed the 100 year celebration of Cody’s death at Lookout Mountain in Golden, CO, but plan to visit soon…it’s only a short distance from my house. I watch a couple of episodes of the show each day…I call it my show fix. ha I’m so surprised that I didn’t know about the show when it came out (I was out of country the first year). Each one of you are excellent actors. Thank you for being part of a wonderful show, it has peeked my interest in the pony express.

  30. Katherine says:

    Dear Ty Miller

I will admit the main reason I watched the show was because of you, I had a big crush on you. Your birthday is the day before mine so it felt like we had something in common. But the other reason was the bond between the Kid and Katy. I had a horse, Harry, who I had the same connection. We got him when he was eleven and I was fourteen. He died three years ago at the age of thirty eight. So when the show was out he was fourteen. Horses live an average of thrty years, longer if well taken care of. Since Katy/Duke was only three or four during the shows airing, I have little doubt she is till alive and enjoying herself. I hope you find out what happened to her and let us know. Thank you for the posting and the great series!

  31. Dante says:

Watched this years ago, still watching it today. I swear, when Kid told Lou she could ride Katy, my eyes near popped. Then, laughed when Lou got excited. Yeah, she knew. Bf pretty much gave her keys to his Lamborghini. Lol
I’m glad the sentiment wasn’t missed
